Franz Rogowski (born February 2, 1986) is a talented German actor. He has worked with famous directors like Michael Haneke and Christian Petzold.

About Franz Rogowski

Franz Rogowski was born in 1986 in Freiburg im Breisgau, which was then West Germany. His father was a children's doctor, and his mother was a midwife. He grew up in Tübingen.

Before becoming an actor, Franz had many different jobs. He worked as a bike courier and helped out in a bookstore. He also went to a clown school in Switzerland and trained as a dancer.

Early Career and Discovery

Since 2007, Franz has been active in independent theater. This means he worked with theater groups that are not part of big, mainstream companies. He performed as a dancer, choreographer (someone who creates dance moves), and actor. He appeared on stages like the Thalia Theater Hamburg.

Franz has a cleft lip that was fixed with surgery. This gives him a slight lisp, which is a unique part of his voice. A director from Berlin named Jakob Lass discovered him for films. Jakob cast Franz in his first movies, Frontalwatte (2011) and the award-winning Love Steaks (2013).

Rising to Fame

Franz Rogowski became known around the world with the movie Victoria (2015). This film was special because it was shot in one continuous take, meaning the camera never stopped rolling! The movie won many awards, including the Silver Bear for its amazing camera work.

In 2017, he played the son of a character played by famous actress Isabelle Huppert in the film Happy End. This movie was shown at the Cannes Film Festival, a very important film event.

He also starred in Transit and In den Gängen. Both of these movies were shown at the Berlin International Film Festival. In 2018, Franz was named a German "Shooting Star" and won the German Film Award for Best Actor for In den Gängen.

International Recognition

Transit helped Franz become even more famous internationally. The movie was even on Barack Obama's list of favorite films in 2019!

In 2020, he worked again with director Christian Petzold on the film Undine. In 2021, Franz was nominated for a European Film Award for his role in Great Freedom. The next year, he was nominated for an Italian film award called the David di Donatello for his part in Freaks Out.

In 2023, his main role in Lubo was shown at the Venice Film Festival. He also starred in the drama Passages. For this role, he won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor.

Movies featuring Franz Rogowski have been shown at major film festivals around the world. He lives in Berlin, Germany.
