Franz Sacher facts for kids
Franz Sacher was an Austrian baker and chef. He is famous for inventing the delicious Sachertorte. This special chocolate cake is known all over the world!
The Sachertorte Story
In 1832, a powerful minister in Austria, Prince Metternich, wanted a special dessert. He was hosting an important dinner with many high-ranking guests. The minister told his kitchen staff, "Don't embarrass me tonight!"
Sadly, the main chef got sick on the day of the dinner. So, the job of making the dessert went to Franz Sacher. He was only 16 years old at the time. Franz was still learning to be a chef. He created a new chocolate cake right on the spot. This cake became the famous Sachertorte.
Franz Sacher was born in Vienna, Austria. He later passed away in Baden bei Wien. He is buried in the Saint Helena Cemetery there.
His son, Eduard Sacher, opened the Hotel Sacher in Vienna in 1876. This hotel is very close to the Vienna State Opera House. The Sachertorte helped make the hotel very famous. Or maybe the hotel helped make the cake famous! The exact recipe for the original Sachertorte is still a secret today.
