François Dauphinais was an important Métis leader in early Manitoba.

François Genthon dit Dauphinais was a significant political leader in early Manitoba. He was born on January 1, 1815, and passed away on February 15, 1889. François Dauphinais was of Métis heritage, meaning he had both Indigenous and European ancestors. He played a key role in the formation of Manitoba as a province.

Early Life and Family

François Dauphinais was the son of Michel Genthon dit Dauphinais and Victorie Ouellette. His family was part of the vibrant Métis community in the Red River Settlement, which is now part of Manitoba. He grew up in a time of great change and development in the region.

He was married twice during his life. His first wife was Françoise Paul. Later, in 1882, he married Marguerite Morin.

A Leader in the Provisional Government

François Dauphinais was an important figure during a time when the Red River Settlement was transitioning to become part of Canada. In 1869, he represented the community of St. François Xavier at a special meeting called a convention. This convention led to the creation of the Provisional Government of Assiniboia.

This Provisional Government was a temporary government formed by the Métis people. They wanted to make sure their rights and the rights of all people in the Red River Settlement were protected as the area joined Canada. François Dauphinais served as the vice-president of this important government. This shows how much trust the community had in his leadership.

Serving Manitoba

After Manitoba officially became a province in 1870, François Dauphinais continued his work in politics. He became a member of the Legislative Council of Manitoba. This council was like an early version of the provincial parliament. He served on the Legislative Council from 1871 to 1876. During this time, he helped make laws and decisions that shaped the new province.

Later Years

François Dauphinais lived to be 74 years old. He passed away in St. John, North Dakota. His contributions helped lay the groundwork for Manitoba's government and ensured the voice of the Métis people was heard during a crucial period in Canadian history.
