Frederick I of Wettin facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Frederick I, Count of Eilenburg was an important leader who lived a long time ago. He was born around the year 960 and passed away on January 5, 1017, in a place called Eilenburg. Frederick was the son of Count Dietrich I and the brother of Dedo I of Wettin. We don't know his exact birthday.

Frederick's Important Roles

Frederick had many important jobs during his life.

Managing Lands and Fortresses

Frederick and his brother Dedo were in charge of a fortress area called Burgward in Zörbig. They started managing this area before the year 1009. This shows they were trusted with important responsibilities from a young age.

Working for the Church

From 973 to 978, Frederick might have been the bailiff for Magdeburg Cathedral. A bailiff was like a manager who looked after the church's property and affairs. This was a significant role, showing his connection to powerful religious institutions.

Guarding Castles

Emperor Henry II also trusted Frederick with important tasks. In 1009 and again in 1015, Frederick was put in charge of overseeing the castle in Meissen. This meant he was responsible for its safety and operations for a period of time. In 1012, Frederick was also near the home of the Archbishop of Magdeburg, Walthard, which suggests he was involved in high-level meetings.

Lands Frederick Ruled

Frederick ruled over several areas. These included his own family lands, known as "allod," and the city of Eilenburg. He also controlled parts of the western March of Lusatia, which was a large border region. Additionally, he had lands belonging to a count in the area called Gau of Quezizi, which was close to Eilenburg.

Passing on His Property

When Frederick died in January 1017, he didn't have any sons. So, he left all his family property to his three daughters. However, he made a special arrangement for Eilenburg. He passed the control of Eilenburg to his nephew, Dietrich I. This was a common way to keep important lands within the wider family when there were no male heirs.
