Sir Frederick Tilney (died 1445) was an important English nobleman. He was the Lord of Ashwellthorpe in Norfolk and Boston in Lincolnshire. He is most famous for being the great-grandfather of two of King Henry VIII's wives: Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. He was also the great-great-grandfather of Queen Elizabeth I.

About Sir Frederick Tilney

Frederick Tilney was born around 1415 in Broxbourne. He was the oldest son of Sir Philip Tilney and Isabel Thorpe. Frederick lived mainly at Ashwellthorpe Manor. He inherited his father's important titles and lands. His family's titles were first earned a long time ago. Frederick had about six brothers and sisters. One of his younger brothers was Hugh Tilney. Hugh was the father of Agnes Tilney. Agnes later married Thomas Howard. Thomas Howard was also married to Frederick's daughter.

His Marriage and Children

Frederick Tilney married Elizabeth Cheney. She was the oldest child of Lawrence Cheney and Elizabeth Cokayne. Lawrence Cheney was an important official. Frederick and Elizabeth had only one daughter.

  • Elizabeth Tilney (born before 1445 – died April 4, 1497). She first married Sir Humphrey Bourchier around 1466. They had three children together. Later, on April 30, 1472, she married Thomas Howard. He became the 2nd Duke of Norfolk. Elizabeth and Thomas had nine children. Some of their famous children included Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk. Another was Elizabeth Howard, who was the mother of Anne Boleyn. Lord Edmund Howard was also their son. He was the father of Catherine Howard.

His Later Life and Death

Frederick Tilney died around 1445. The reason for his death is not known. He was buried at All Saints Churchyard in Newsham Abbey. Because he died young, his daughter Elizabeth became the owner of his lands. His wife, Elizabeth Cheney, married again one year later. She married Sir John Say. Sir John Say was a Speaker in the House of Commons. He also worked for King Henry VI.
