General characteristics |
The Caroline was a sailing ship that weighed about 200 tons. This means it could carry a lot of cargo. It became famous for a special journey it made in 1785, helping a group of people find a new home.
The Caroline's Journey
On October 19, 1785, the Caroline set sail from Nantes, a city in France. The ship was under the command of Captain Nicolas Baudin. He was an experienced sailor chosen to lead this important trip.
Helping the Acadians
The main goal of the Caroline's journey was to transport 80 Acadians to Louisiana. The Acadians were French-speaking people who had lived in a region of North America called Acadia (which is now part of Canada). They had been forced to leave their homes many years before. The Caroline was one of several ships that helped these families move to new lands.
The long voyage across the Atlantic Ocean took several weeks. Finally, on December 17, 1785, the Caroline safely arrived at New Orleans. This city is located in Louisiana, which was then a Spanish colony. For the 80 Acadians on board, this arrival marked the beginning of a new life in a new place.
