Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Fujiwara no Michikane (born in 961 – died on June 13, 995) was an important Japanese nobleman and a monk during the Heian period. He was the son of a powerful leader named Kaneie. Michikane played a role in the government of Japan, especially towards the end of his life.

Life of Fujiwara no Michikane

Fujiwara no Michikane was born into the very influential Fujiwara family. This family held a lot of power in Japan during the Heian period, often guiding the emperors. Michikane spent some time as a monk, which means he lived a religious life.

Michikane's Return to Politics

In the year 994, Michikane's nephew became the new emperor, Emperor Ichijō. Because of this important event, Michikane left his life as a monk. He returned to the world of government and took on a significant role.

Becoming a Minister

When he came back to politics, Michikane was given the position of Udaijin. This title means "Minister of the Right." It was a very high-ranking job in the Japanese government at that time.

The Seven-Day Regent

The next year, in 995, Michikane took over an even more powerful role. He became the imperial regent, known as Kampaku. This meant he was the chief advisor and helper to the emperor, often making many important decisions for the country. He took over from his older brother, Michitaka.

A Short Time in Power

Sadly, Michikane's time as regent was very short. He died just one week after becoming the Kampaku. Because of this, he is sometimes remembered by a special nickname: Nanoka no Kampaku. This means "the seven-days regent." After his death, his younger brother, Michinaga, took his place as regent.

Michikane's Family

Fujiwara no Michikane had children. His son was named Fujiwara no Kanetaka. He also had a daughter named Fujiwara no Sonshi. Some families, like the Rusu clan, later said they were descendants of Michikane.
