Furs of Valencia facts for kids
The Furs of Valencia were the main laws of the Kingdom of Valencia for a very long time, through the Middle Ages and into early modern times. Think of them like a very old version of a country's Constitution. They set out the rules for how the King, the nobles, the church, and the courts would work together. These laws helped keep things fair and balanced.
The first ideas for these laws came from other places like the Usages of Barcelona and the laws of Aragon.
How the Furs Began
The first King of Valencia, James I of Aragon, officially created the Furs in 1261. This happened at the first ever Valencian Parliament. King James I even promised to follow these new laws himself. He took an oath of office to rule according to the Furs.
A Long History of Laws
The Furs were used for more than 400 years! They were very important for the people of Valencia. But in 1707, a new king, Philip V of Spain, changed many laws across Spain. He signed the Nueva Planta decrees, which ended the Furs of Valencia.
Today, some parts of the old Furs are starting to be used again. In 2006, the Valencian Community decided to bring back some of these unique old laws. This shows how important they still are to the region's history.
