Futatsuryū Jun'ichi (双津竜 順一), born Jun'ichi Yamamoto, was a famous sumo wrestler from Hokkaidō, Japan. He was born on February 28, 1950, and sadly passed away on August 12, 2014, from lung cancer.

After he stopped wrestling, he became a top coach for a sumo training center called Tokitsukaze stable. In 2007, he was removed from his coaching role due to serious problems that happened at his stable.

Becoming a Sumo Wrestler

Futatsuryū started his professional sumo career very young, at just 13 years old, in September 1963. He quickly moved up through the ranks.

  • Moving Up: Six years later, in November 1969, he reached the second-highest sumo division, called jūryō. He earned this spot by winning a championship in the third-highest division, makushita, with a perfect score of 7 wins and 0 losses.
  • Top Division Debut: In March 1972, he made it to the top division, known as makuuchi. He spent a total of 29 tournaments in this top division.
  • Highest Rank: His highest rank was komusubi in July 1979. This is one of the special "sanyaku" ranks, just below the very top champions. He was known for being one of the heavier wrestlers of his time.

He continued to wrestle even after falling from the top division, eventually finishing his career back in the makushita division.

Life After Wrestling

Futatsuryū retired from active sumo in November 1982. After retiring, he became an "elder" in the Japan Sumo Association, which is like a respected senior member. For nearly 20 years, he worked as an assistant coach at his old training center, or heya.

In August 2002, he became the head coach of the Tokitsukaze stable. He helped two of his wrestlers, Tokitenkū and Toyonoshima, reach the top sumo division in 2004. He also served as a judge during sumo matches.

Later Years

In 2007, Futatsuryū faced serious issues at his stable, which led to his dismissal from the Japan Sumo Association. This was a very rare event for a head coach.

He passed away on August 12, 2014, at 64 years old, due to lung cancer.
