Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Future Trees Trust is a special group that works to make more and better hardwood trees grow in Britain and Ireland. Hardwood trees are strong trees like oak and ash. This charity helps protect and improve these important trees for the future.

How the Trust Started

This group started in 1991. Back then, it was called the British and Irish Hardwoods Improvement Programme, or BIHIP for short. Its main goal was to help hardwood trees grow stronger and more numerous across Britain and Ireland. In 2008, the name changed to the Future Trees Trust.

The Future Trees Trust is a registered charity. This means it's a non-profit group that helps the public. It works in England, Wales, and Ireland. Many other groups help support its work. The Trust has special teams that focus on different types of trees. These teams study and research six important hardwood trees: ash, birch, cherry, oak, sycamore, and walnut.

Protecting Ash Trees

In 2019 and 2020, the Trust helped plant 3,000 ash trees in England. These trees are part of something called the Ash Archive. This archive is like a special collection of ash trees that have shown they can fight off a serious fungal disease. This disease is caused by a tiny fungus called Hymenoscyphus fraxineus. By studying these strong trees, scientists hope to find ways to protect more ash trees from this disease in the future.
