Gabriel Caruana was born in Balzan, Malta on April 7, 1929. His father, Anthony Caruana, was a police sergeant. His mother was Beatrice Ebejer Michelizzi.
He studied art at the Malta Government School of Arts. His teachers included famous artists like George Borg and Vincent Apap. In 1980, he married Mary Rose Buttigieg. She was also an artist and a teacher. They had two daughters named Gabriella and Raffaella.
His Art and Career
Gabriel Caruana was a very important artist in Malta. He was one of the first to create modern art there. He found ideas for his art from old Maltese traditions and the island's unique buildings.
Caruana had many art shows all by himself in Malta, England, Italy, and Switzerland. He also showed his art in group exhibitions in many other countries. These included Japan, the USA, Germany, and Australia.
You can find his artworks in museums around the world. Some of these are the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, Italy. His art is also at the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, England. The National Museum of Fine Arts in Malta also has his pieces. Some of his works were even sold at big international art auctions.
In 1952, Gabriel Caruana helped the St. Gabriel Band Club of Ħal Balzan. They took part in the National Carnival Festivities in Valletta. They won many awards for their float, dance, and costumes!
From 1971 to 1990, he taught ceramics. He worked at the School of Arts and Crafts in Mosta, Malta. This school later became part of the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology. After he retired in 1990, another artist named Tony Briffa took over his teaching role.
In 1990, Gabriel Caruana and his wife, Mary Rose, opened an Arts, Culture and Crafts Centre. It was located at the Ta' Ganu Windmill in Birkirkara, Malta. This center helped share art and culture with many people.
