About Gabriel Dawe
Gabriel Dawe grew up in Mexico City. He first studied to become a graphic designer. This means he learned to create visual designs for things like websites or magazines. While studying at the University of Texas at Dallas, he started thinking about how fashion (clothes) and architecture (buildings) are connected.
He uses materials like fabric and thread in his art. This is because when he was a child, his grandmother wouldn't let him learn sewing. This was due to old ideas about what boys should or shouldn't do.
His Education
Gabriel Dawe earned his first degree in Graphic Design. He studied at the Universidad de las Américas in Puebla, Mexico. Later, he got his master's degree in fine arts from the University of Texas at Dallas. For two years while studying there, he was an artist in residence at CentralTrak. This means he had a special place to work and create art.
The Plexus Art Series
The "Plexus" series is named after the word "plexus." A plexus is like a network of nerves or blood vessels in your body. Gabriel Dawe's "Plexus" artworks are huge networks of sewing thread. They explore the different colors of light that we can see.
These art pieces are often made for a specific place. They are usually temporary, meaning they are only there for a short time. When the art shows are over, Gabriel Dawe turns these large thread displays into smaller, compacted pieces. He calls these smaller pieces "relics."
One of his most famous "Plexus" works was shown at the Renwick Gallery. This was part of their "Wonder" exhibition when the gallery reopened. He has also created "Plexus" artworks at other places. These include the Amon Carter Museum of American Art and the Denver Art Museum.
