Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gabriela Ruiz (born around 1991), also known as Leather Papi, is a cool artist from Los Angeles, California. She mostly creates sculptures and performs her art live.

About Gabriela Ruiz

Gabriela Ruiz grew up in the San Fernando Valley, California. She went to Ulysses S. Grant High School in Van Nuys. Gabriela taught herself art. She got into the art world through a friend, Ignacio “Nacho” Nava Jr. He organized "Mustache Mondays," which were fun dance and performance events that Gabriela often went to.

Through these events, she started to become known. She worked in many different art forms. These included fashion design, making costumes, live performances, creating sculptures, making videos, and using social media. In her art, she often shares stories about her Latinx background and her identity.

Her Artworks

In all her art, Gabriela Ruiz explores what culture and identity mean through feelings. Her artworks often use bright, bold colors. She also makes casts (copies) of her own body. Sometimes, her art includes electronic parts.

Haus

The Haus Show was an art exhibition that felt like an interactive home. It had spaces designed like regular rooms in a house, such as a living room, a bathroom, and a bedroom. It also featured a special, unique room.

This exhibition showed sculptures and a short film called Red is Dead. Gabriela Ruiz and Derek Holguin created the film. The show also included a party hosted by Gabriela Ruiz herself.

A Cinderella Story of Everyday Objects

A Cinderella Story of Everyday Objects was an art installation in Mexico City. It used several cool elements. There were projected images and videos on surfaces. It also had live music and sounds. Objects were hung in the air.

This show used colors like yellow and orange. The walls were painted yellow, and the hanging objects were orange. The items hanging included two windows, a fancy light (chandelier), and a small bed. On the floor, a tiny television played a video over and over.

Full of Tears

The Full of Tears exhibition was Gabriela Ruiz's first solo show. It was a self-portrait, but in a very big way! It was a large art installation. This piece focused on projecting images and videos. It also featured sculptures made from casts of her body.

The spaces in the exhibition were painted green. Each sculpture was cast in red. These clashing colors helped to show the different feelings inside and outside.
