Gale Brewer is an American politician from New York. She was born on September 6, 1951. She is a member of the Democratic Party.
Gale Brewer has served in the New York City Council for the 6th district since January 2022. She also held this job from 2002 to 2013. From 2014 to 2021, she was the 27th Borough President of Manhattan. A Borough President is like a mayor for one of New York City's five main areas. They help manage the borough and speak up for its residents.

Gale Brewer's Education
Gale Brewer went to the Winsor School in Boston, graduating in 1969. She earned a bachelor's degree from Bennington College in 1973. Later, she got a master's degree in Public Administration from Harvard University in 1990. She also earned a second bachelor's degree from Columbia University in 1997.
Working in Government
Gale Brewer has a long history of working in public service.
- From 1975 to 1978, she helped schedule events for Mary Anne Krupsak. Mary Anne Krupsak was the Lieutenant Governor of New York.
- From 1978 to 1990, Gale Brewer was the chief of staff for Ruth Messinger. Ruth Messinger was a member of the New York City Council.
- From 1990 to 1994, she worked for New York City's federal office. This was during the time David Dinkins was mayor.
- From 1994 to 1998, she was a Deputy Public Advocate. She worked under Mark Green.
After these roles, Brewer managed a project for New York City nonprofits. She also worked with a company that builds affordable homes. She was part of Manhattan's Community Board 7. She also led the New York State chapter of the National Women's Political Caucus. In 2000, the New York Daily News named her one of "50 New Yorkers to Watch."
Political Journey
Serving on the City Council (2002–2013)
Gale Brewer started serving on the New York City Council in 2002. She represented the 6th district. This district covers parts of Manhattan. When she ran for re-election, she won with many votes. She won again in 2003, 2005, and 2009.
As a Council member, Brewer helped pass important laws.
- She supported laws to protect people who work in homes.
- She helped create a committee to improve internet access in New York City.
- She worked on a system for electronic death records.
- She also helped make city publications available online.
- She supported bills to reduce graffiti and unwanted stickers.
From 2002 to 2009, Brewer led the Committee on Technology in Government. In 2004, her committee released a study. It looked at how to expand digital opportunities in public schools. Manhattan Borough President (2014–2021)
Because of term limits, Gale Brewer could not run for City Council again in 2013. Term limits mean you can only serve a certain number of times. So, in February 2013, she decided to run for Manhattan Borough president.
She won the Democratic primary election in September 2013. She then won the main election in November 2013. She started her new job in January 2014.
Gale Brewer was re-elected as Manhattan Borough President in 2017. She served two terms. Due to term limits for Borough Presidents, she could not run for that job again in 2021.
In the 2020 United States presidential election, she was an alternate elector. Electors are people who officially cast votes for president.
Back to the City Council (2022–Present)
In December 2020, Gale Brewer announced she would run for her old City Council seat. She ran in the 2021 New York City Council election. On November 2, 2021, she won the election. She beat Nancy Sliwa with over 82% of the votes.
Today, Brewer leads the City Council's Committee on Oversight and Investigations. She is also a member of several other committees. These include committees on consumer protection, finance, and higher education. She is part of the Manhattan Delegation and the Women's Caucus. She also helps with the city's budget negotiations.
Gale Brewer is running for the City Council's new 6th district in 2023. She is also a member of the Vote Blue Coalition. This group supports Democrats in New York and nearby states.
Awards and Recognition
In 2018, the Metropolitan College of New York gave Gale Brewer an honorary doctorate degree. This award recognized her long career. It honored her work on important issues in New York City. These issues include affordable housing, land use, health care, and workers' rights.
