Galeras is a small town and a municipality (which is like a local government area) in northern Colombia. It's part of the Sucre Department. People in Galeras mostly work in farming and raising animals. The town is about 50 kilometers away from Sincelejo, which is the capital city of the Sucre Department.
Culture and Festivals
Every year, usually in the first week of January, the people of Galeras have a big celebration called the El Festival de la Algarroba. This festival is the town's main party and a really fun time for everyone!
What is Algarroba?
The festival is named after the algarroba tree. This tree, also known as Hymenaea courbaril, grows very easily in the Galeras area. It's an important part of the local environment and culture.
