Departments of Colombia facts for kids
Colombia is a country in South America. It is divided into 32 main areas called departments (departamentos in Spanish). There is also one special area called the Capital District (Distrito Capital), which is where the capital city, Bogotá, is located.
Each department has its own leader called a Governor (gobernador). People vote for the Governor every four years. A Governor cannot be chosen again right after their term ends. Each department also has a group of elected people called the Department Assembly (Asamblea Departamental). These departments are like smaller parts of the country. They have some freedom to make their own decisions about local matters.
