Vaupés is a special part of Colombia. It is called a department. Its main city and capital is Mitú. Vaupés shares a border with Brazil to the east.
This department is located deep inside the Amazon jungle. Because of this, there are no roads that connect it to the rest of Colombia. You also won't find roads connecting towns within Vaupés. People travel mainly by boat along the big rivers. Airplanes are also very important for getting around. Many small towns have airstrips. These airstrips allow people to fly to Mitú, the capital city.

How Vaupés is Organized
Vaupés has a small population. However, it covers a very large area of land. Because of this, it is organized a bit differently. It has only three main towns, called municipalities. Other areas are special Corregimientos. These are like smaller districts with some local government roles.
