The Giant Meteorite of Gancedo
In September 2016, something truly amazing happened near Gancedo. Scientists and researchers found a massive meteorite buried underground. This space rock is incredibly special because it's the second largest meteorite ever discovered on Earth!
How Big is the Meteorite?
The Gancedo meteorite is enormous. It weighs about 30 tonnes, which is the same as about five adult elephants! Imagine trying to move something that heavy. It's truly a giant from space.
When Did It Fall?
Scientists believe this huge meteorite crashed into Earth a very long time ago, around 2000 BC. That means it fell over 4,000 years ago, long before any modern cities or countries existed. It's incredible to think it lay hidden for so many centuries.
Where Was It Found?
The meteorite was found in a place called Campo del Cielo, which means "Field of the Sky." This area in Chaco Province is famous for having many meteorites. Thousands of years ago, a huge meteor shower scattered many pieces of space rock across this region. The Gancedo meteorite is one of the biggest pieces from that event.

Finding such a large meteorite is a big deal for scientists. It helps them learn more about the early Solar System and how planets formed.
