Garaynbal facts for kids
The Garaynbal people, sometimes called Karingbal, are an Aboriginal Australian group from Queensland. Long ago, they spoke a language called Garaynbal, which was a type of the Biri language. Sadly, this language is no longer spoken today.
Where the Garaynbal Lived
The Garaynbal people lived in a large area of land in Queensland. It was about 7,250 square kilometers (2,800 square miles) in size. This land was around the beginnings of the Comet River and the upper part of the Mackenzie River.
Their country stretched south from near Rolleston all the way to the Carnarvon Range. To the west, their land reached Consuelo Peak. To the east, it went as far as the Expedition Range and Bedourie.
How They Organized Their Society
The Garaynbal people had a special way of organizing their community. Their society was divided into four main groups, which they called "classes." These classes helped decide who could marry whom.
People from one class had to marry someone from a different, specific class. This system helped keep their community strong and connected. Here are the names of these classes:
Male Class Name | Female Class Name |
---|---|
Bunyart | Bunyarrum |
Thadbine | Thadbinun |
Binjool | Binjoolun |
Kiarra | Kiarrun |
