García Sánchez of Castile facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

García Sánchez (died 1029) was the last independent count of Castile. He ruled from 1017 until his death. He was the son of Sancho García and his wife Urraca. García Sánchez became count when he was just a boy.

Early Life and Regents

Because García Sánchez was so young, he could not rule by himself. During this time, important noblemen from Castile helped govern. His aunt, Urraca, who was the head of the nunnery in Covarrubias, also helped. The county of Castile was also looked after by his brother-in-law, King Sancho III of Pamplona (also known as Sancho the Great).

A Tragic End

García Sánchez became old enough to rule on his own in 1028. The next year, he traveled to León. He was going there to marry Sancha, who was a princess and the sister of King Bermudo III of León. However, as he was about to enter the church for his wedding, he was attacked. Two noblemen from Castile, the brothers Rodrigo Vela and Íñigo Vela, killed him. They had been sent away from Castile earlier.

Who Came Next?

After García Sánchez died, his title as count was given to his nephew, Ferdinand. Ferdinand was the younger son of García's sister, Muniadona, and her husband, Sancho the Great. Ferdinand then married Sancha, the princess García Sánchez was supposed to marry. This event changed the future of Castile.
