The Garden Court Condominiums is a beautiful building found at 2900 East Jefferson Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. It was once known as the Garden Court Apartments. This historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. This means it's an important place worth protecting because of its history and special design.

What Does the Garden Court Look Like?

The Garden Court Condominiums is a very tall building, standing nine stories high. It has an "H" shape when you look at it from above. The front of the building, which faces Jefferson Avenue, looks the same on both sides, making it symmetrical.

The bottom two floors are covered with light-colored limestone. The rest of the building is made from red brick. You can see two round bay windows that go all the way up, from the ground to the top floor. The very top floor has special limestone decorations around the windows. There's also a decorative fence, called a balustrade, along the edge of the flat roof.

A Look Back: Its History

The Garden Court Apartments were built in 1915. A man named J. Harrington Walker had them constructed. He was part of the famous Hiram Walker & Sons company. Interestingly, Mr. Walker lived right across the street from where the Garden Court was being built. Once it was finished, he moved into one of the new apartments himself!

When it first opened, the building had 32 very large and fancy apartments. These were considered luxury homes. Later, in 2008, the Garden Court Apartments were changed into condominiums. This means people could buy individual units instead of just renting. Now, the building has 65 units, with one, two, or three bedrooms.

The Garden Court building was even featured in a popular television show called Martin.
