Garrison Chapel, Pembroke Dock

The Garrison Chapel is a special building located in Pembroke Dock, Wales. It was once a chapel for the Royal Dockyard, which was a very important place where ships were built and repaired for the Royal Navy. Today, it has a new life as a museum, telling the story of the area's history.

Building the Chapel

The Garrison Chapel was designed by an architect named George Ledwell Taylor. He worked for the Navy Board, which was in charge of the Royal Navy's buildings. Construction on the chapel began in the early 1830s and it was finished around 1834 or 1835.

When it was first planned, a certain amount of money was set aside for the building. However, the amount was later reduced. A year after the chapel was completed, more money was provided. This extra funding was used to add galleries inside. These galleries helped make space for more people to attend services. They also created an additional entrance to the building.

What Happened Next?

After serving as a chapel for many years, the building found a new use. From 1974 until 1986, it became home to the Pembrokeshire Motor Museum. This museum displayed various types of vehicles.

However, after the museum moved out, the building was sold to a developer. Sadly, it then started to fall apart and was not looked after. Because of its importance, the local council decided to buy it in 2003. This was done to save the historic building from further damage.

A New Purpose Today

The Garrison Chapel has been beautifully rebuilt and restored. This restoration was made possible with funding from the European Union. Today, the building is home to the Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre. This center is run by the Pembroke Dock Sunderland Trust.

The Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre is a fantastic place to learn about the history of Pembroke Dock. It tells stories about the dockyard, the people who worked there, and the famous Sunderland flying boats. The chapel itself is a very important historical building. It is officially recognized as a Grade II* listed building, which means it has special architectural or historic interest.
