How the Vet School Started
In 1859, a smart teacher named James McCall moved to Glasgow. He used to teach at a vet college in Edinburgh. In Glasgow, he opened a vet practice. He also started giving talks about how to care for animals.
By 1862, he began teaching formal classes. His practice moved to a bigger place. It was in some stables at 397 Parliamentary Road.
In 1863, the college got a special permission from the King or Queen. This made it the Glasgow Veterinary College. Students could now take official exams to become vets. The first student graduated in 1865. This was the second vet school in Scotland. The first was in Edinburgh, where James McCall had studied. In 1873, the college moved again. It went to a much larger building on Buccleuch Street. This building used to be a water pumping station. The college officially joined the University of Glasgow in 1949. The current Vet School buildings were built in 1970. They are on the Garscube Estate.
Where the Vet School Is Now
The school is now located at the Garscube Estate. This area is in Bearsden, just outside Glasgow. The university bought this land in 1948. The main house on the estate was used as a hospital during the Second World War.
The school has many important places on this estate:
- A farm where students learn about farm animals.
- A hospital for small animals, like cats and dogs.
- A hospital for horses.
- The James Herriot Library. This library is named after Alf Wight. He was a famous vet and writer who studied here.
- Student housing called Wolfson Halls.
- The Garscube Sports Complex. Students use this for sports, including the school's rugby team.
The school also has facilities at the Cochno Estate. The university bought this land in 1954. It is a large area with a farm. It also has a beautiful house called Cochno House.
What You Can Study Here
