Gary Martin's Football Journey
Gary Martin started his football career in Darlington, England. He joined Middlesbrough as a young player. He was very good at scoring goals for their youth and reserve teams. For the youth team, he scored 19 goals in 39 games. For the reserve team, he scored 17 goals in 26 games.
In 2010, Gary went on loan to Újpest, a club in Hungary. He played two games for them before returning to England.
Playing in Iceland
After leaving Middlesbrough in May 2010, Gary moved to Iceland. He signed with ÍA on July 23, 2010. He quickly made his debut and scored his first goal for the club a few weeks later.
In August 2011, Gary had a short loan spell with Hjørring in Denmark. He played seven games there before returning to ÍA.
After two successful seasons with ÍA, Gary joined KR, one of Iceland's top teams.
Success with KR
Gary had a great time at KR. In the 2013 season, KR won the Úrvalsdeild title, which is Iceland's top football league. Gary was one of the best goal scorers in the league, with 13 goals. He was even named the best foreign player in the league and was chosen for the Team of the Year.
During this time, Gary also played in the UEFA Europa League for the first time. He scored his first goal in this big European competition against Glentoran. He continued his goal-scoring form, becoming the top scorer in the Úrvalsdeild again in the 2014 season, also with 13 goals.
Moving to Other Leagues
On February 15, 2016, Gary signed a three-year contract with Víkingur Reykjavík, another team in Iceland's top league. Later that year, on August 10, 2016, he went on loan to Lillestrøm, a club in Norway's top league, Tippeligaen. He played 10 games and scored 4 goals for them. He returned to Víkingur Reykjavík in January 2017.
Gary then moved to Belgium, signing with Lokeren on January 16, 2017. He stayed there for a while but left the club in October 2017.
Return to England and Norway
On October 24, 2017, Gary signed a new contract to return to Lillestrøm in Norway, starting in January 2018. Before that, he had a short spell with York City in England, joining them on November 2, 2017.
He made his debut for York City two days later and even helped set up a goal. He scored his first goal for York City on November 25, 2017, with a great shot from outside the penalty area. Gary left York City soon after, as the club found out he had also been playing for another local team at the same time.
In 2018, Gary officially rejoined Lillestrøm and played 19 games for them, scoring 2 goals.
Back to Iceland and England
In January 2019, Gary signed with Valur, the champions of Iceland's Úrvalsdeild. After five months, he moved to another Icelandic club, ÍBV. He had a fantastic 2019 season, finishing as the top scorer in the Úrvalsdeild with 14 goals combined for Valur and ÍBV.
In January 2020, Gary went on loan to his hometown club, Darlington. After that, he signed with Selfoss in Iceland in May 2020. In April 2024, he went on loan to Víkingur.
In November 2024, Gary returned to England and signed a two-year deal with Bishop Auckland. He scored on his debut for them on November 16. In May 2025, Gary joined Hebburn Town, where he plays today.
