Gaspar de Baeza (born in Baeza around 1540, died in 1569) was a smart Spanish person who lived during a time called the Spanish Golden Age. He was known as a humanist, a lawyer, a translator, and a writer.

About His Life

Gaspar de Baeza studied law at two important universities: the University of Granada and the University of Salamanca. There, he learned from a teacher named Juan Orozco. People thought he was one of the best legal experts of his time. He followed a style of legal thinking that was popular in Italy, started by a famous person named Andrea Alciato.

He worked as a lawyer in Granada and also taught at its university. He often went to special meetings called "tertulias" at Alonso de Granada Venegas's house. These were like discussion groups where smart people would meet and talk. At these gatherings, he met many other famous writers and thinkers, including Hernando de Acuña, Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, Juan Latino, Luis Barahona de Soto, Pedro de Padilla, Gregorio Silvestre, and Jorge de Montemayor.

Gaspar de Baeza was also a talented translator. He translated several books from Latin into Spanish. These books were originally written by a very smart author known as Paulo Jovio. Some of his translations included "Historia General" (published in 1562-63), "Comunidades de España" (published in 1564), and "Elogios o vidas breves de los caballeros antiguos y modernos" (published in 1568). Besides law and translation, he was also very good at theology (the study of religion), philosophy, grammar, geography, and history.
