Gaspar de la Huerta facts for kids
Gaspar de la Huerta (born 1645, died 1714) was a talented Spanish artist. He was born in a town called Campillo de Altobuey in the Cuenca province of Spain.
When he was young, Gaspar wanted to learn how to paint. He moved to Valencia to find a teacher. There, he met Jesualda Sanchez, who was the wife of a painter named Pedro Infant. After Pedro died, Jesualda continued to run his art school. This school was known for creating many religious paintings.
Learning to Paint
Even though the school focused on religious art, Gaspar de la Huerta became very skilled. He learned how to draw well and use colors beautifully. He eventually married Jesualda's daughter, who brought a good dowry (money or property given to the husband by the bride's family).
Because Gaspar de la Huerta charged fair prices for his work, he was always busy. Many churches and monasteries in the area hired him to create paintings for them.
Famous Works
Gaspar de la Huerta painted several important works for religious groups.
- For the Franciscan religious order, he painted a piece called Jubilee of the Porciuncula.
- For the Dominicans, he created a painting that was used to cover a famous statue called Our Lady of the Forsaken.
Gaspar de la Huerta passed away in Valencia in 1714. Today, the Museum of Valencia has one of his lovely paintings. It shows Christ and the Virgin enthroned. The Virgin Mary in this painting has the bright skin tone often seen in people from Valencia.
