Gauri Mahadevi facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gauri Mahadevi was an important queen who ruled the ancient Indian kingdom of Toshala. This kingdom was part of the Bhauma-Kara dynasty. She ruled around the years 910 to 916.

Some historians believe she was a "queen regnant," meaning she ruled the kingdom herself. Others think she might have been a "regent." A regent is someone who rules for a young king or queen until they are old enough. In Gauri Mahadevi's case, she might have been ruling for her daughter, Dandi Mahadevi, who was still a child.

Who Was Gauri Mahadevi?

Gauri Mahadevi was married to King Subhakaradeva V. When her husband passed away, she took over the throne. This was a common practice in ancient kingdoms when a king died without an adult heir.

Her Time as Queen

Not a lot of detailed information is known about Gauri Mahadevi's rule. However, historical records describe her as a very successful leader. She was known for keeping her kingdom peaceful and orderly. This meant that people felt safe and laws were followed.

One ancient inscription, called the Kumurang plate, talks about her rule. It says that "the entire population" of the kingdom respected her greatly. This shows how much her people looked up to her and followed her leadership.

End of Her Rule

Gauri Mahadevi's rule ended in 916. After her, her daughter, Dandi Mahadevi, became the next queen of Toshala.
