The General Ice Cream Corporation Building is an old factory building in Providence, Rhode Island. It is a special historic place because it was once a very busy ice cream factory. This building helped make a lot of delicious ice cream for people in the state for many years.

A Sweet History
This historic building is located at 485 Plainfield Street in the Silver Lake area of Providence. It is made of brick and has two main parts. One part of the building is two stories tall, and the other is three stories tall.
The factory was built in different stages between 1915 and 1918. This was because the company that owned it, Dolbey Ice Cream Company, was growing very fast. They needed more space to make all their ice cream.
From Dolbey to General Ice Cream
The Dolbey Ice Cream Company became very successful. By 1921, it was the biggest ice cream maker in all of Rhode Island. The company kept making ice cream in this building for many years.
Over time, the company went through some changes. It joined with other companies and became part of the General Ice Cream Corporation. This new, bigger company continued to use the building to make ice cream.
Making Ice Cream for Many Years
The factory kept producing ice cream until 1960. After that, another big food company, National Dairy Products Corporation, took over. They made ice cream under the famous Sealtest brand name in the same building.
Later, National Dairy Products Corporation became part of Kraft Foods, Inc. The building continued to be used for making ice cream for a few more years. However, by 1967, the factory finally closed its doors.
A Historic Landmark
The General Ice Cream Corporation Building is important because it shows how industrial buildings were designed and used in the early 1900s. It is also a great example of an early ice cream production facility.
Because of its history and unique design, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. This means it is officially recognized as a place that is important to the history of the United States.
