The General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union was a very important job. It was the top leader of the only political party allowed in the Soviet Union. This person was often seen as the main leader of the entire country.
At first, the job of General Secretary was not the most powerful. The Premier was usually the main leader, like Lenin was. But Joseph Stalin changed this. He made the General Secretary position the most powerful role in the Soviet Union.
From 1953 to 1966, this important job was called the First Secretary instead of General Secretary.

Nikita Khrushchev: The First Secretary
- Nikita Khrushchev took over on September 7, 1953. During his time, the title was changed to First Secretary. He served until October 14, 1964. Khrushchev was born on April 15, 1894, and passed away on September 11, 1971.
