Gentryville was officially planned and marked out on a map in 1848. This process is called platting. The community got its name from Gentry County, where it is located. Before it was even platted, a post office opened in Gentryville in 1846. This post office helped people send and receive letters for many years. It stayed open until 1938, when it finally closed down.
