The Story of George's Island
The movie is about a ten-year-old boy named George (Nathaniel Moreau). He lives in an old house near the Halifax Harbour. George lives with his grandfather, Captain Waters (Ian Bannen). Captain Waters uses a wheelchair. He used to be a sailor and loves telling George exciting ghost stories.
Captain Kidd's Treasure Tale
Captain Waters often tells a spooky story. He claims he once saw the ghost of Captain Kidd. This ghost appeared right in Halifax Harbour. At school, George learns about Captain Kidd's buried treasure. People say it is hidden on nearby George's Island. George shares his grandfather's ghost story in class. His teacher, Miss Birdwood (Sheila McCarthy), gets upset. She thinks George is having problems at home.
Trouble and a New Home
Miss Birdwood starts looking into George's home life. She becomes very worried about Captain Waters. She reports her concerns to Mr. Droonfield (Maury Chaykin) at Child Services. While Mr. Droonfield decides what to do, George has to move. He is placed temporarily with a foster family, the Beanes. Mr. Beane is played by Brian Downey. Mrs. Beane is played by Irene Hogan. They keep George in a very strict and unhappy home.
Escape to George's Island
On Halloween night, George and another foster child, Bonnie (Vickie Ridler), decide to escape. Captain Waters helps them. They all head for safety on George's Island. Miss Birdwood and Mr. Droonfield chase after them. But they accidentally wake up some real ghosts! These are the ghosts of Captain Kidd (Gary Reineke) and his crew. The ghosts think the people are trying to steal their gold.

Inspiration for the Film
George's Island is a real island. It is located in the Halifax Harbour. People in the area have many old stories about the sea. These stories are called maritime folklore. Some tales say pirates are still looking for treasure. They want revenge for gold stolen from the island. These exciting local stories helped create the script for the film.
