Early Life and Medical Journey
George Armstrong was born in a place called the Liddel Valley in Roxburgh, Scotland. He was the eighth child of the local church minister. His brother, John Armstrong, became a well-known poet.
Before becoming a full doctor, George Armstrong worked as a pharmacist in Hampstead, England. This means he prepared and sold medicines. Later, he moved to London and became a qualified physician, ready to help people with their health.
Helping Sick Children: The First Dispensary
In 1769, George Armstrong opened something very special in London. It was called the Dispensary for the Infant Poor. This was the very first place of its kind in the world! It was a clinic specifically for poor children who needed medical help.
People donated money to keep the dispensary running. Over twelve years, it's believed that about 35,000 children received care there. This shows how much help was needed. Sadly, the dispensary closed in 1781 because it didn't get enough money to continue.
Writing About Children's Health
George Armstrong also wrote an important book in 1767 called An Essay on the Diseases most Fatal to Infants. This book shared his knowledge about common illnesses that affected babies and young children. It was so helpful that new versions were printed in 1771 and 1777. The 1777 edition was even dedicated to Queen Charlotte!
In his writings, Armstrong explained that his dispensary welcomed children "without any letters of admission." This meant that poor parents didn't need special permission to bring their sick children. If a child was very ill and needed quick help, they were treated right away. Another doctor, Michael Underwood, also wrote about children's health and used some of Armstrong's ideas in his own book.
Later Life and Legacy
George Armstrong passed away in 1789. He left behind three daughters and his wife. Even though his dispensary closed, his work and writings were very important. He helped start the field of paediatrics, which is the branch of medicine focused on the health of children. His efforts showed how important it was to have doctors who specialized in caring for young people.
