Sir George Alfred Arney (1810 – 7 April 1883) was an important judge. He became the second Chief Justice of New Zealand. This means he was the main judge in the country.

George Arney's Early Life
George Arney was born in 1810 in Salisbury, England. His father, William Arney, was a lawyer. George went to school at Winchester and then to Brasenose College, Oxford University.
He studied law and became a lawyer in 1837. In 1835, he married Harriet Parr. Sadly, she passed away just seven years later.
Life and Work in New Zealand
Sir George Arney was chosen for his important role by the British government. He arrived in Auckland, New Zealand, on a ship called the Gertrude in February 1858.
Becoming Chief Justice
He started his job as Chief Justice in 1858. He held this important position until 1875. This meant he was in charge of the courts and legal system in New Zealand for many years.
Helping to Govern New Zealand
Sometimes, when the Governor of New Zealand was away, Sir George Arney would step in. He became the temporary leader, called the Administrator of the Government. He did this for three months in 1873. He helped run the country between two governors.
Joining the Legislative Council
Soon after arriving, Sir George Arney also joined the New Zealand Legislative Council. This was a group of people who helped make laws for the country. He was a member from 1858 until 1866.
Being Knighted
In 1862, Sir George Arney was given a special honour. He was made a knight. This is why his name starts with "Sir."
In 1875, Sir George Arney retired from his job as Chief Justice. He then moved back to Torquay in England.
Death and Remembering Sir George Arney
Sir George Arney passed away in Torquay, England, on 7 April 1883. He is buried in the churchyard of Salisbury Cathedral in England.
There is a street named after him in New Zealand. Arney Street in Paeroa is part of State Highway 26.
