The George Atwater House is a special old house located at 1845 State Street in Hamden, Connecticut. It was built around 1820. This house is a great example of a farm home from the Federal period, which was a style popular in the early 1800s. It has a well-kept inside and a unique layout. Because of its history and design, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. This means it's an important building worth protecting.

What Makes the George Atwater House Special?

The George Atwater House is found in the southeast part of Hamden. It sits on the east side of State Street, which is also known as United States Route 5. The house is a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and its outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboards.

Unique Design Features

What makes this house interesting is its roof. Unlike many homes from the Federal period, its roof peak runs from side to side, not front to back. The main door faces the street and is on the right side of the house's front. The top part of the front roof looks like a triangle, with a half-circle window in the middle.

The front door has a small porch built in the early 1900s. This porch has a pointed roof and is held up by square posts. It also has a half-circle design above the door, which matches the window in the main roof. The windows on the house are rectangular and have small decorative ledges above them.

Inside the Historic Home

Inside the George Atwater House, you can still see many original features from when it was built. The main living room has a beautifully carved fireplace. The house also has an unusual layout. An original one-story section extends out to the north, where the kitchen was first located. Later, in the mid-1800s, another section was added to the south side of the house.

A Look at the Atwater Family History

The Atwater family has a long history in this area. They owned land here since the 1600s, when the New Haven Colony was first settled. An early family member, David Atwater, owned hundreds of acres of land.

George Atwater, who was a descendant of David, built this house around 1820. George Atwater did not have children. So, after he passed away, the house and land went to his nephews. The Atwater family continued to own the house until 1933.
