George Baillie-Hamilton-Arden, 11th Earl of Haddington (born July 26, 1827, died June 11, 1917), was an important Scottish landowner. He was also a "representative peer," which meant he was chosen to represent Scottish nobles in the British Parliament. He played a role in Scottish public life for many years.
Life of the Earl
George Baillie-Hamilton-Arden was the son of the 10th Earl of Haddington. His father was also named George Baillie-Hamilton. His mother was Georgina Markham.
Lord Haddington was chosen to be a representative peer in 1874. He held this important position until he passed away. In 1871, he was the High Sheriff of Cheshire. This was a senior legal and administrative role in that area. He also became the Lord Lieutenant of Haddingtonshire in 1874. This role meant he was the King's official representative in that county.
He was an honorary Colonel of the Lothians and Border Horse. This was a military unit. He was also an officer in the Royal Company of Archers. This is a special ceremonial bodyguard unit for the monarch in Scotland.
In 1886, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a group of famous scientists and thinkers in Scotland. He resigned from the Society in 1892.
Lord Haddington received a special award in 1902. He was made a Knight of the Order of the Thistle. This is one of the highest honors in Scotland. King Edward VII personally gave him this award at Buckingham Palace.
He lived at a large house called Tyninghame House. It is located near Prestonkirk in East Lothian, Scotland.
