Sir George Bolles (who died on September 1, 1621) was an important English merchant. He became the Lord Mayor of London in 1617.

Early Life and Career

George Bolles came from a place called Gosberton in Lincolnshire, England. He became a successful merchant in the City of London. He was also a member of the Worshipful Company of Grocers, which was a powerful group for merchants.

From 1602 to 1607, Bolles was part of the committee for the East India Company. This company was very important for trade with countries far away. In 1606, he became the Master of the Grocers Company.

Becoming a City Leader

On July 14, 1607, George Bolles was chosen as an alderman for Dowgate ward in London. An alderman was a senior leader in the city government. He then served as Sheriff of London from 1608 to 1609. The Sheriff helped keep law and order in the city.

He continued his work with the East India Company from 1610 to 1611. In 1616, he became an alderman for a different area, Walbrook ward.

Lord Mayor of London

In 1617, George Bolles was elected Lord Mayor of London. This was a very important job, like being the main leader of the city.

While he was Lord Mayor, there's a famous story about him. He is said to have stopped the royal carriages. This happened when they were driving through London on a Sunday during church service. King James I was very surprised. He reportedly said he thought he was the only king in England! Even after this bold act, Bolles was made a knight on May 31, 1618. Being knighted meant he was given the title "Sir."

Family Life

Sir George Bolles married Jane Harte. Her father was Sir John Harte, who had also been Lord Mayor of London in 1589. Through his marriage, Bolles gained a large estate in Scampton, Lincolnshire.

Sir George and Jane Bolles had four children. Their son, Sir John Bolles, became the 1st Baronet. He also served as the High Sheriff of Lincolnshire.

Death

Sir George Bolles passed away in 1621. He was buried at St Swithins church in London.
