George Cushingberry Jr. (born January 6, 1953) is an American politician from Michigan. He has served as a member of the Detroit City Council and the Michigan House of Representatives.
About George Cushingberry Jr.
George Cushingberry Jr. was born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 6, 1953. His parents were George and Edna Cushingberry. He finished high school in 1971 at Detroit Cass Technical High School.
His Education
George Cushingberry Jr. studied at Wayne State University. He earned two degrees there: a bachelor's degree and a master's degree. Both were in Political Science, which is the study of how governments work. He also focused on Urban Politics, Policy, and Administration, learning about how cities are run. Later, in 1991, he earned his law degree, called a Juris Doctor, from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.
His Career in Politics
In 1975, George Cushingberry Jr. made history. He was elected to the Michigan State House, becoming the youngest person to serve there. He worked in the State House until 1982. After that, he joined the Wayne County Board of Commissioners. This group helps manage Wayne County, Michigan. He served on this board for sixteen years.
On November 2, 2004, Cushingberry was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives again. He represented District 8 as a Democrat. He won with a very high percentage of the votes. He continued to serve District 8 after winning re-election in 2006 and 2008.
After these elections, George Cushingberry Jr. was chosen to lead the Appropriations Committee until 2010. This committee helps decide how the state's money is spent. Later, he ran for City Council in Detroit, representing District 2. He won this election with more than half of the votes. In 2014, he was elected President Pro-Tempore of the City Council. This means he was a leader among the council members. He was also chosen to be the Chairman of the Budget, Finance, and Audit Committee. This committee looks after the city's money and spending.
Beyond politics, George Cushingberry Jr. is an associate pastor at Northwest Unity Baptist Church in Detroit. He is also a lifelong member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He hosts a radio show called "Northwest Unity Prospector Reveals" on WDRJ 1440 AM in Detroit every Saturday. He also works as a lawyer, helping people with family law, business law, bankruptcy, and criminal defense. He owns his own law firm, The Law Firm of George Cushingberry and Associates.
