Kids Encyclopedia Facts

George Douglas (died 28 December 1589) was an important Scottish nobleman and church leader from the late Middle Ages. He held the important position of Bishop of Moray.

Early Life and Family Connections

George Douglas was the son of Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus, a powerful Scottish noble. Although he was born outside of marriage, he was officially recognized as his father's son in 1543. This recognition was a big deal at the time.

Becoming a Church Leader

George Douglas became involved in the church early in his life.

  • In 1546, he was appointed as a main leader at Arbroath Abbey, an important religious house.
  • Later, in 1572, he was known as the "Commendator of Arbroath." This meant he was in charge of the abbey's lands and income, even if he wasn't living there all the time.

Bishop of Moray

In 1573, George Douglas was chosen to become the Bishop of Moray, a significant church role in Scotland. He officially became bishop in February 1574.

He served as Bishop of Moray for 16 years until his death in 1589. During this time, he often lived in Edinburgh, Scotland's capital. He was involved in the political events of the time, especially during the period when James VI was still a young king.

George Douglas was buried at Holyrood Abbey, a historic church in Edinburgh that is now mostly in ruins.
