Who Was George Cates?
George Edward Cates was born on May 9, 1892. His parents were George and Alice Ann Cates. They lived in Wimbledon, London.
Early Life and School
George went to Rutlish School in Merton. After finishing school, he worked as a clerk. He helped with paperwork for an insurance company.
Joining the Army
In December 1914, a big war started. It was called the First World War. George decided to join the army. He became part of the 28th London Regiment, also known as the Artists' Rifles.
In August 1915, George went to France to fight in the war. Later, he became an officer. His rank was Second Lieutenant. This means he was a junior leader in the army.
A Heroic Act
George Cates was 24 years old during the war. He was a Second Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion of The Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own). On March 8, 1917, he showed amazing bravery. This happened in a place called Bouchavesnes in France.
Because of his actions that day, he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Sadly, George Cates died on March 9, 1917, the day after his heroic act.
