George Fortescue (born around 1578, died 1659) was an English writer who created essays and poems. He lived a long time ago, during the 1600s.

About George Fortescue's Life

George Fortescue was born in London around 1578. His father, John Fortescue, later moved to St. Omer to avoid difficulties because of his Catholic faith.

George likely studied at special schools for English Catholics in Europe. He attended the English College of Douay and later the English College at Rome. In 1614, his parents called him back to Flanders.

Later, George worked in London as a secretary for his cousin, Anthony Fortescue. Anthony was a representative for the Duke of Lorraine. In 1647, the English Parliament dismissed Anthony. George was arrested and spent sixteen weeks in prison. After his release, he had to leave England with his cousin.

George was known for being very learned. A famous scholar named Edmund Bolton even wanted him to be part of a planned royal academy, a special group for respected thinkers. George also corresponded with important people of his time, including the famous scientist Galileo Galilei.

George Fortescue passed away in 1659.

George Fortescue's Writings

George Fortescue wrote several works, including:

  • Feriæ Academicæ: This was his main work. It was a collection of essays written in Latin.
  • The Sovles Pilgrimage to heavenly Hierusalem: This was a poem published in 1650. It described a spiritual journey in three parts.
