The George Gabriel House is a special old home located at 31 Lenox Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was built in 1898. This house is a great example of Colonial Revival architecture, which is a style that looks back to early American homes. It is also one of the oldest houses in the Richmond Heights neighborhood of the city. Because it is so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

What Makes the George Gabriel House Special?

The George Gabriel House is in a quiet, residential area called Richmond Heights. This neighborhood is northwest of downtown Worcester. The house is made of wood and has two and a half stories. Its roof slopes down on all four sides, which is called a hip roof. The outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards, known as clapboard.

A Look at the House's Design

The house has a mostly rectangular shape. At the front, there is a porch with columns that have fancy, swirly tops. These are called Ionic columns. On the second floor, right above the porch, there is a rounded window that sticks out from the wall. This is called a bowed oriel. Inside this oriel is a special window with three parts, known as a Palladian window.

The roof has windows that stick out, each with its own small, pointy roof. These are called gabled dormers. These dormer windows have round-arch tops. The corners of the house have flat, decorative columns called Corinthian pilasters. The main roof also has a decorative trim that looks like a row of small teeth, which is called dentil moulding. Inside, the house has twelve rooms, and five of these are bedrooms.

The Story of the House and Its Builder

The George Gabriel House was built in 1898 for George W. Gabriel. He worked as a bookkeeper and later became the General Manager for a company called George F Blake & Co. This house was one of the first projects designed by Lucius W. Briggs, a well-known architect from Worcester.

Before 1896, the area where the house stands was mostly farmland. Then, the land was divided into smaller plots so people could build homes. The George Gabriel House is one of the first and most beautiful homes built in the Richmond Heights neighborhood. It shows a trend where wealthier families in the city started moving to live on the west side of Worcester.
