Kids Encyclopedia Facts

George Goring (born after 1522 – died 1594) was an important English politician during the time of Queen Elizabeth I. He was known for his work in government and for building and owning several grand homes.

Who Was George Goring?

George Goring was the second son of Sir William Goring, a respected figure from Burton Park in Sussex, England. George followed in his family's footsteps, becoming involved in public service and politics.

His Political Career

George Goring held several important positions during his life. In 1578 and 1579, he was appointed the High Sheriff for both Surrey and Sussex. A High Sheriff was a very important local official, responsible for keeping peace and order in the county, and making sure laws were followed.

He also served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the town of Lewes. This meant he was chosen to represent Lewes in the Parliament of England, which was like the country's main law-making body. He was an MP in 1559 and again in 1563.

In 1584, George Goring was given a big job for life: he became the receiver-general of the Court of Wards. This court was responsible for managing the money and property of young people who had inherited wealth but were not yet old enough to manage it themselves. George Goring was in charge of collecting and looking after some of the Crown's (the Queen's) money.

George Goring's Homes

George Goring was also known for his building projects and for buying land. He built a house called Pelham House in Lewes. He also bought several large estates, known as manors, across Sussex.

One of his most famous purchases was Danny Park in 1582. He made many improvements to Danny House in 1593, making it much larger and more impressive. Today, Danny House is a Grade I listed building, which means it's a very important historical building in England.

His Family Life

George Goring married a woman named Mary. She was the daughter of William Everard and had been married before to Richard Bellingham. George and Mary had two sons and two daughters together.

Their eldest son, also named George Goring, followed his father into politics and also became a Member of Parliament for Lewes. One of their daughters, Dorothy, married two important men: first, Sir Henry Bowyer, who was a wealthy ironmaster, and later Sir John Shurley, who was also an MP.
