This church is a Christian faith that follows many traditions from the Church of England. He is best known for starting and leading a famous church in New York City. He passed away on November 17, 1897.

Early Life and Education

George Hendric Houghton was born in a town called Deerfield, Massachusetts. He was a bright student. He went to New York University and finished his studies there in 1842. After that, he continued his education at the General Theological Seminary. He graduated from the seminary in 1845. This is where he trained to become a clergyman.

Starting a Special Church

In 1848, George Houghton started a new church in New York City. This church became very well-known. It was officially named the Church of the Transfiguration. He served as its rector, or head pastor, until he died.

The "Little Church Around the Corner" Story

The church got its famous nickname from a touching story. An actor named George Holland passed away. His friends wanted a pastor to lead his funeral. One pastor refused because actors were not always accepted in churches back then. But he told them to try the "little church around the corner." This church, led by Reverend Houghton, welcomed everyone. Because of this, it became a beloved place for actors and artists.

Contributions and Recognition

Reverend Houghton was known for his kindness and helping others. He did a lot of "benevolent work," which means he spent time helping people in need. He was also very good at teaching Hebrew. This is an ancient language important to religious studies. Because of his teaching skills, Columbia College gave him a special honorary degree in 1859. This degree was called a Doctor of Divinity.

Later Years and Legacy

George Hendric Houghton continued to lead his church for many years. He passed away on November 17, 1897. He died at the rectory, which is the house next to the church where the pastor lives. After his death, his nephew, George Clarke Houghton, took over as the church's rector. Reverend Houghton left behind a legacy of kindness and acceptance.
