The George Klindt House is a special old building in Davenport, Iowa. It's located in the city's West End. This house is so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's officially recognized for its historical value.
A Look Back: The Klindt House Story
George Klindt was an important person in the brewery business in Davenport. In 1891, he became a partner in the Mengel & Klindt Brewery. He took over from his father, Henry, who had been a partner since 1876.
In 1894, all the breweries in Davenport joined together. They formed a new company called the Davenport Malting Company. George Klindt became the secretary-treasurer of this new, bigger company.
This house was built between 1894 and 1895. It was the third of three houses built on Marquette Street for the brewery partners. George Mengel's house was at 826 Marquette Street. Henry Klindt's house was at 834 Marquette Street.
What Does the House Look Like?
The George Klindt House is a two-story building. It has a square shape with an extra wing at the back. The house features a special kind of roof called a Mansard roof. It also has fancy windows on the roof called dormers, which have small triangle shapes above them. These features are common in the Second Empire style.
The front of the house has an enclosed porch. It also has a decorative triangle shape above the entrance. These details suggest the house was built a bit later in the Second Empire style period. The house sits high up on a hill, looking over the street. Behind the house, there's a large building that was once a carriage house (for horses and carriages) and is now a garage. It has a unique roof shape called a gambrel roof.
