Kids Encyclopedia Facts

George Mackenzie (born around 1662, died 1760) was a Scottish politician. He came from Inchcoulter, a place in Ross-shire, Scotland. He served in the Parliament of Scotland from 1704 to 1707. Later, he was a member of the British House of Commons from 1710 to 1713.

Early Life and Family

George Mackenzie was the oldest son of Alexander Mackenzie of Inchcoulter. His mother was Katherine Mackenzie. George took over his father's estate around 1687. In June 1695, he married Anne Mackenzie.

Stepping into Politics

By 1704, George Mackenzie became a Sheriff Depute for Ross-shire. This meant he was a local official who helped with law and order. In the same year, he was chosen as a Shire Commissioner for Ross-shire. A Shire Commissioner was like a representative for a region in the Scottish Parliament.

After the Act of Union in 1707, Scotland and England joined to form Great Britain. George Mackenzie was not chosen to be a member of the new British House of Commons right away.

Serving in Parliament

In 1710, George Mackenzie became the provost of Fortrose. A provost is like a mayor, leading the town. In the same year, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Inverness Burghs. This happened during the general election of 1710.

As an MP, he often voted against the government's plans. He lost his seat in the 1713 general election. He also stopped being the provost of Fortrose. In 1715, he lost another job as a collector of rents.

Later Years

George Mackenzie sometimes showed support for the Jacobites. The Jacobites were people who wanted the old royal family (the Stuarts) to return to the throne. However, George Mackenzie never took any active steps to help them.

He lived a long life and passed away on April 1, 1760. He was 98 years old when he died. George Mackenzie had two sons and five daughters.
