Sir George Nares (1716–1786) was an important English lawyer, judge, and politician. He played a big role in the legal system during his time.

Early Life and Education

George Nares was born in Hanwell, Middlesex. He was the younger son of George Nares, who worked for the Earl of Abingdon. His older brother was James Nares, a famous composer.

George Nares went to school at Magdalen College School in Oxford. Later, he joined a special legal society called the Inner Temple in 1738. He officially became a lawyer, or "barrister," in 1741.

A Career in Law

Nares worked as a lawyer in courts that handled criminal cases. He even defended a woman named Elizabeth Canning in a famous trial in 1754.

In 1759, he earned a special legal title called "degree of the coif." This meant he was a very experienced lawyer. In the same year, he became one of the "king's serjeants," which was a top legal position working for the king.

He also worked on important legal cases for the government. For example, he was involved in cases related to a newspaper called The North Briton in 1763.

Joining Politics

In 1768, George Nares was elected to the House of Commons. This is a part of the British Parliament where laws are made. He represented the city of Oxford, where he was also a "recorder" (a type of judge).

He was involved in important political discussions during his time in Parliament.

Becoming a Judge

In 1771, George Nares became a judge in a major court called the Court of Common Pleas. This was a very important job. He was also given the title of "Sir" and became a knight.

As a judge, he heard many significant cases. Sir George Nares served as a judge for more than 15 years. He passed away in Ramsgate in 1786 and was buried in Eversley, Hampshire.

In 1773, Oxford University gave him an honorary degree, D.C.L., for his achievements.

Family Life

Sir George Nares married Mary Strange in 1751. She was the daughter of Sir John Strange, another important legal figure. Mary passed away in 1782.

They had several children. Their oldest son, John, also became a magistrate and lawyer. John's grandson, George Strong Nares, later became a famous Arctic explorer! Their second son, George Strange, became a captain in the army. Their youngest son was Edward Nares, who became a writer and professor.
