Playing for His Club
St Martin's Hurling
George O'Connor played both hurling and Gaelic football for his local club, St Martin's. He started playing when he was very young. In 1974, when George was just 14, his club won the county minor hurling championship. He was a substitute on that winning team.
By 1976, St Martin's won the minor championship three times in a row. George was a key player on the team by then. In 1977, he helped St Martin's win the intermediate hurling championship. This win allowed the club to play in the senior league. Even though they reached the semi-finals many times in the 1980s, George's team never won the senior championship.
St Martin's Football
George also played Gaelic football for St Martin's. In 1982, he helped the club win the intermediate football championship.
Playing for Wexford County
Early County Career
George O'Connor first became known as a player for the Wexford minor hurling team. This was in the late 1970s. He was the captain of the team that reached the 1977 Leinster final. However, Wexford did not win that game.
In his last year as a minor player, George also played in the Leinster football final. But the Dublin team won against Wexford. In 1979, George won a Leinster under-21 title. Wexford surprised everyone by beating Kilkenny in that final. Later, the team lost to Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final.
Senior Team Debut
George was chosen to play for the senior Wexford team. He played his first senior game in the 1979 Oireachtas final. Wexford won that game against Offaly. Two years later, in 1981, George was one of the best players on the team. He received an All-Star award, which is a big honor in Gaelic games.
In 1983, George also had success in football. Wexford beat Clare to win the Division 3 final of the National Football League. Over the next ten years, Wexford's hurling team played in five Leinster finals. But they lost every time. In 1993, Wexford played Cork in the National League final. It was a long series of three games, but Wexford eventually lost.
All-Ireland Victory
In 1994, Wexford lost in the provincial championship again. George thought about retiring from playing for the county. But the new manager, Liam Griffin, convinced him to keep playing.
In 1996, George hurt his hand in a game against Dublin. This was a provincial semi-final. However, he still played a small part in the final. He helped Wexford win their first Leinster title since 1977.
The next big game was the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship final. Wexford played against Limerick. Limerick had lost the 1994 final, so they were eager to win. George O'Connor started the game at midfield. Even though Wexford had one player sent off, they won the game! George received an All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship medal. This was a huge achievement for him and his team.
After playing for Wexford for seventeen seasons, George O'Connor retired from inter-county hurling.
