George Clark Payne (born February 17, 1887 – died 1932) was an English professional football player. He played as an inside left, which is a forward position in football. George is best known for his two years playing for Crystal Palace in the Southern Football League. He also played for other big clubs like Sunderland and Woolwich Arsenal.
George Payne's Football Journey
George Payne started his professional football career in 1906. He joined Tottenham Hotspur, a club in the Southern Football League. He played there until 1908.
After leaving Tottenham, George spent two seasons with Crystal Palace. He was a very good goal scorer for them. In 1911, he moved to Sunderland, a team in the top division of the Football League.
However, George only played two games for Sunderland. In January 1912, he returned to the Southern League to play for Leyton. Later that year, he joined Woolwich Arsenal. He played three games for their main team. He also played for their reserve team, scoring 9 goals in 16 games. George left Arsenal at the end of the 1912–13 season.
His football career ended because of an injury he got while serving in the First World War.
About George's Life
George Payne was married to a woman named Miriam. Her brothers, George, Harry, Vic, and Willie Furr, were also famous footballers from Hitchin.
During the First World War, George served as a private in the Bedfordshire Regiment. He was injured in September 1918, which sadly meant he could no longer play football.
