George Thomas John Sotheron-Estcourt, 1st Baron Estcourt (born January 21, 1839 – died January 12, 1915) was an important British politician. He was a member of the Conservative Party. For part of his life, he was known as George Bucknall-Estcourt, and later as George Sotheron-Estcourt.
Who Was George Sotheron-Estcourt?
George Sotheron-Estcourt came from a family that was very involved in British politics. His father, Hilary Bucknall-Estcourt, and his grandfather, Thomas Bucknall-Estcourt, were both Members of Parliament (MPs). An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the British Parliament, which is like the country's main law-making body.
In 1876, George inherited land and property from his uncle, Thomas H. Sotheron-Estcourt. Because of this, he officially changed his last name to Sotheron-Estcourt.
His Time in Politics
George Sotheron-Estcourt was an MP for an area called Wiltshire North. He served in this role from 1874 to 1885. As an MP, he helped make decisions and laws for the country.
Later, in 1903, he was given a special title called a "peerage." This meant he became a Baron, which is a noble title. He was known as Baron Estcourt. This title was connected to places like Estcourt in Gloucestershire and Darrington in Yorkshire.
Family Life
Lord Estcourt married a woman named Monica Stepylton in 1863. They did not have any children.
He passed away in January 1915 when he was 75 years old. Because he had no children, his title of Baron Estcourt ended when he died. This is called the barony becoming "extinct." Lady Estcourt, his wife, died a few years later in March 1922.
