George Tilson was an important British government worker who lived from about 1672 to 1738. He worked for a long time as an Under-Secretary of State in what was like the country's foreign affairs department. This department handled how Britain talked with other countries.

George Tilson's father was Nathaniel Tilson from London. His grandfather was Henry Tilson, who was a Bishop of Elphin, a religious leader.

Early Career

From 1703 to 1706, George Tilson worked as a secretary for the British diplomat sent to Prussia. This diplomat was named Baron Raby. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in another nation.

Working for the Government

From 1710 until he passed away in 1738, Tilson held a very important job. He was an Under-Secretary for the Northern Department. This department was in charge of Britain's relationships with countries in northern Europe.

He worked under many different top government officials, called Secretaries of State. These leaders came from different political groups, like the Tories and the Whigs. Some of the famous people he worked with included Bolingbroke, Townshend, and Lord Carteret.

A famous writer named Thomas Carlyle once said that Tilson's name often appears in old government papers from that time. This shows how involved he was in the daily workings of the government.

George Tilson also had a brother named Christopher Tilson. Christopher was also a long-serving government official in the treasury department. He was even a Member of Parliament for Cricklade from 1727 to 1734.

Royal Society Member

In May 1735, George Tilson was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a special honor given to people who have made important contributions to science and knowledge.
